Boost for local apprentices

FOLLOWING the resounding success of their inaugural partnership, Group Training Employment (GTE) and the Community Bank Mt Gambier & District have announced the return of their vocational scholarship for 2026.

This year, the partner organisations have increased the award to $5000, reinforcing their shared dedication to championing the next generation of skilled tradespeople in the Limestone Coast.

This collaborative initiative highlights the powerful synergy between two community-focused organisations.

The Community Bank has long been a pillar of local support, maintaining a deep-rooted Host Employer relationship with GTE.

Their commitment to vocational excellence is evidenced by their track record – five trainees have completed their training at the Mount Gambier branch, including Taylor Freeman, who was named the GTE Trainee of the Year in 2024.

By partnering with GTE—a leader in local apprenticeships—the bank continues to reinvest in the region’s economic future.

This year’s program builds on the legacy of the 2025 inaugural recipient Jonathan Bennier.

An 18-year-old first-year apprentice chef at Mayura Station’s The Tasting Room, Jonathon set a high standard for the award.

Nominated for his bright future and keen interest in the hospitality industry, Jonathan’s journey has been defined by his remarkable resilience and hard work in the face of personal barriers.

His success story—from a high school student recommended by a teacher to an apprentice with international culinary ambitions—serves as a testament to the impact this scholarship can have on a young person’s trajectory.

GTE field operations manager Kyle Gleed said Jonathan was a very worthy first recipient who proved that with the right support, local apprentices can overcome financial hurdles to do big things.

The $5000 scholarship is specifically designed to alleviate the burden of costs that often hinders vocational students.

The funds are intended to cover essential professional expenses, such as specialized tools and equipment, travel costs for work or training and general living expenses.

The program is open to GTE-employed apprentices and trainees in the South East region with at least 10 months remaining on their Contract of Training.

A collaborative selection panel will evaluate candidates based on their vocational aptitude, work ethic, and demonstrated financial or situational hardship.

The nomination period opened on July 20 and closes on August 20.

Candidates may nominate themselves, or be put forward by employers, parents, or trade school lecturers.
