THE City of Mount Gambier has released a draft Strategic Action Plan for The Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre, setting a bold vision to strengthen its position as South Australia’s flagship regional gallery and is inviting community feedback.

Developed following consultation in 2024 and 2025, the draft reflects insights gathered through workshops, stakeholder meetings and community discussions, alongside broader engagement including the CBD Masterplan community consultation and Mount Gambier 2035 process.

The plan identifies key priorities and projects to elevate The Riddoch’s profile, build on its reputation for excellence in regional arts and culture and enhance its role as a destination for both visitors and locals.

City of Mount Gambier General Manager People, Place and Liveability Chris White said the draft plan demonstrates a strong commitment to community-led cultural development.

“This draft plan has been shaped by engagement with our community and stakeholders and sets a clear direction for the future,” Mr White said.

“It builds on the strengths of our region while positioning Mount Gambier as a leading cultural destination within South Australia and beyond.”

Director Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre Ashleigh Whatling said the plan captures the aspirations of the community and the local arts sector.

“After nearly two years of consultation, industry benchmarking and future planning, we are delighted to present this action plan for community feedback,” Ms Whatling said.

“Throughout the processes we heard a clear desire for a gallery that is bold, inclusive and diverse, one that shares local stories while introducing new ideas. Education, identity and strong governance were recurring themes and are reflected throughout the plan.”

Key initiatives include strengthening governance and community engagement, enhancing and digitising the Riddoch Collection, delivering ambitious and locally relevant exhibitions, expanding education and public programs and refining The Riddoch’s identity in alignment with Mount Gambier’s cultural landscape.

The plan also highlights opportunities to support the Limestone Coast’s creative sector through investment, partnerships and professional development, reinforcing the region’s reputation for artistic excellence and innovation.

The draft has been informed by community consultation, research and benchmarking of regional galleries nationwide, as well as key strategic documents including the City of Mount Gambier Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028, Yerkalalpata Reconciliation Action Plan, Creative Australia Strategic Plan 2024 – 2028, Create SA’s A Place to Create Delivery Plan 2025 – 2027 and the Country Arts SA Strategic Plan.

Community members are encouraged to review the draft Strategic Action Plan and provide feedback to help shape the future direction of The Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre.

“We encourage the community to share their feedback as we move into the next stage of The Riddoch’s evolution as South Australia’s flagship regional gallery,” Ms Whatling said.
