UNITED Way Glenelg is delivering a little extra joy to older residents across the Glenelg Shire this Christmas, thanks to the generous support of Ventia and their subcontractors S&S Excavations Pty Ltd, Berry and Whyte Surveyors and Tutt Bryant Hire.

Each year, United Way Glenelg coordinates Christmas hampers for older community members, offering a meaningful gesture during a time when many feel the pinch of rising living costs. This year, the initiative has received a significant boost, with Ventia and their partners stepping in to help increase the number of hampers from 200 to 260.

The hampers contain a selection of festive treats and essentials for people who may otherwise go without.

United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr said the support has come at a time when loneliness and isolation are becoming more common.

“Loneliness and social isolation continue to rise, especially for older people who may have fewer connections than they once did. The cost of living is pushing many to stay home more, reducing opportunities to socialise and feel part of the community.”

Ms Carr said small gestures can have a big impact.

“To receive a Christmas hamper is a reminder that someone cares,” she said. “These small acts of kindness can make a real difference to a person’s wellbeing during what can be a very isolating time of year.

“Food prices are high, and many older residents are feeling the pressure more than ever.

“The extra contribution from Ventia and their subcontractors means we can reach more people with a small box of joy and let them know their community hasn’t forgotten them.”

Christmas hampers are delivered directly into people’s homes, ensuring they reach those who may otherwise miss out on festive cheer.

“We are incredibly grateful to Winda-Mara, DWECH, Portland District Health, Heywood Rural Health, Dartmoor Bush Nursing, Merino Bush Nursing, Casterton Memorial Hospital, St Vincent de Paul and Life Goods Services & Supports,” Ms Carr said.

“These organisations do extraordinary work supporting older residents, and their willingness to deliver hampers directly into each home ensures every recipient feels valued.”

She also thanked Merino Consolidated Primary School for once again writing letters for each resident, and volunteer Helen Westhorpe for her support.

Ventia project manager David Courtot said supporting the initiative reflects their commitment to the region.

“We’re proud to support the communities we work in. Partnering with United Way Glenelg on these Christmas hampers is a simple way we can help older residents feel valued and supported, especially when times are tough. It’s important to us that our contribution makes a genuine difference,” Mr Courtot said.

The 260 Christmas hampers will be delivered throughout December to older residents across the shire.
