Hard working volunteer honoured
THE Millicent Lions Club annually presents a ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award at their changeover dinner.
The Award is about recognising and making public the volunteering of people whose involvement would be clearly missed if they were they not members of our community.
Earlier this month, outgoing club president Stewie Pounsett presented this year’s award to Ron Wood.
The citation outlined Ron’s involvement in the community, which dates back to 1975, when he and his wife Mary transferred to the district.
The organisations he has been involved with is an extensive list.
He is a life member of the Millicent Squash Club serving as President, Secretary, and is an active member of its committee, keeping it alive and raising necessary funds for its ongoing existence.
Currently, the Squash Club has lots happening whether its fitness, gym, racquet ball, table tennis, or programs for kids.
Ron’s involvement with children also extended to his work with the Millicent North Kindy over many years.
Ron’s connection with horses goes back to participation with the pony clubs where he was awarded life membership.
He has been the convener of horse events at the Millicent Show, with the Hunt Club in past years, and the Millicent Racing Club, serving as treasurer.
Ron has been part of the Millicent and Surrounds Health Support Group (MASH) since its inception 10 years ago and serves as its secretary.
MASH is a local initiative that supports and advocates for the improvement of health services in the community and publishes a comprehensive Local Health Services Guide which puts people in contact with all the possible health related services that they may need.
Ron’s volunteer philosophy is such that if there is something that he can help someone with, then he is willing to do it, and this extends to his active support for people in aged care, who’s lives need the sort of practical assistance which he can and does provide.
