New meeting pods at Portland Library

GLENELG Shire Council is pleased to announce the installation of two new meeting pods at the Portland Library, providing flexible, private spaces for community members to connect, work and access services.

The meeting pods were made possible after Glenelg Libraries successfully secured $41,969 in funding through the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program. The investment supports the evolving role of libraries as inclusive, modern community spaces.

Located centrally within the library, the pods offer fit-for-purpose spaces for people wanting to take calls, attend online appointments, participate in meetings or interviews, or undertake focused study or work. They increase the availability of quiet, functional spaces for the community during busy periods and are designed to enhance privacy and reduce noise within the library environment.

The installation includes a four-person pod with benches and a table, as well as a single-person pod featuring a height-adjustable desk and stool to support comfort and accessibility.

The pods are equipped with modern, user-friendly technology, including mains power and USB-C outlets for device charging, adjustable lighting with settings suitable for video calls or work and study, and sound-reduction design providing approximately 30dB of noise attenuation.

Mayor Cr Karen Stephens said the meeting pods deliver clear benefits for community wellbeing and connection.

“These meeting pods are a practical investment to support wellbeing and connection in our community,” Cr Stephens said. “They create welcoming, private spaces where people can access services, attend online appointments, take calls or focus on their work. We’re very grateful for the State Government’s support in helping us deliver this important improvement for our community.”

The meeting pods are available for short-term community use and can be booked in one-hour blocks, with a maximum booking of two hours. Bookings can be made by speaking with Portland Library staff. No food or drink is permitted when using the pods, and children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.

The pods have already received regular use in the short time they have been available, highlighting strong demand for flexible and accessible spaces within the library.
