Reigning premiers win intra-club clash
CENTRAL v Central Magpies
Sister teams Central and Central Magpies met in the early Division 1 game at Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday.
Magpies were away in the top of the first when Brad Lynagh singled to leftfield and eventually crossed the plate on a wild throw.
Central retaliated scoring three. Coach and leadoff batter Kyall McClean doubled to left field, Nathan Meinck dropped one short to rightfield, McClean scored on a passed ball, Alex Ridding bombed one out to leftfield scoring Meinck and Ridding became the third when he crossed home plate on another passed ball.
In the next dig Patrick O’Hehir picked a base on ball then crossed on a wild pitch while in the next inning Josh Chuck picked a walk and was batted in by Kyall McClean giving the senior team a five run to one lead.
The young team then doubled their score in the top of the fourth.
Jake Turner’s Texas Leaguer to rightfield landed in front of the fielder and scored on an error from Jordy Carrison’s hit into the infield.
Unfortunately, this was the last time the Magpies troubled the scorer from a batting point of view as Central continued to add runs.
Dylan Chuck started the run in the bottom of the sixth when he doubled to centerfield.
Alex Ridding followed doubling to rightfield which scored Chuck, then Cooper Smith drew a walk, Dave Harris’ flyball to leftfield was grassed allowing Ridding to add to the score.
Smith scored on Colby Muller’s sacrifice fly to leftfield, Josh Chuck hit safely to centerfield and both he and Harris were batted in by Kyall McClean.
They invoked the mercy rule in the eighth after Dave Harris picked a walk and crossed on Josh Chuck’s second consecutive hit to centerfield and in an anti-climax crossed home on a wild throw.
Central had 12 safe hits, 10 base on ball, 1 hit batter, 7 runs batted in, 1 strike out and made 3 errors. Magpies had 2 safe hits, 3 base on ball, 1 hit batter, 7 strikeouts and made 2 errors.
Tigers v South Indians
In the late game between South Indians and Tigers, the Orange and Black set a hard task for the Indians in the very first inning although the Red and White created most of the problems.
The first four batters, Riley Parsons, Cooper Pitkin, Joe Sims and Matt Thompson all received walks with Parsons rewarded with the first of seven runs in the dig.
Pitkin and Sims scored when Dyllan Lane’s hit to second base resulted in a wild throw, Riley Rolph batted in Thompson when he hit safely to centerfield and Jake England was thrown the fifth walk of the inning.
Lane crossed on Will Merchant’s hit into another error and both Rolph and England were batted in by Cooper Pitkin who managed to get the ball through the infield giving the Tigers a great start to the game.
Not to be denied the Indians fought back to cut the advantage to four.
Consecutive single base hits to Ryan Whitwell, Ben Nash and Jett Lewis with his huge hit to leftfield scoring the first two runners.
Lewis was batted in by Zac Ratcliffe before the innings came to a close.
Matt Thompson for the Tigers slammed a hit to right field and was batted in by Jake England in the top of the second.
Two more in the third when again the South pitchers were plagued by walks to Cooper Pitkin and Joe Sims both batted in by Matt Thompson’s safe hit to rightfield.
Tigers were starting to put the game to bed as they added three more in the fourth.
Riley Rolph singled to centerfield, Jake England was hit by the pitcher and they were both batted in by Toby McKinnon’s huge hit to leftfield which saw him stand up at third base.
He crossed the home plate on Cooper Pitkin’s single to leftfield. South kept the game alive when they scored two in the bottom of the fourth.
Phoenix Cole blasted a hit out to rightfield and he crossed the dish when Ben Nash did the same.
Nash was batted in by Jett Lewis leaving them in arrears by eight runs.
Tigers put the icing on the cake in the top of the sixth.
Will Merchant singled to shortstop, Toby McKinnon was hit by the pitcher, Merchant scored on Riley Parson’s hit into the infield, Cooper Pitkin’s two bagger to leftfield scored McKinnon and Dyllan Lane batted in Pitkin giving Tigers the mercy win in two hours of baseball.
Tigers had 11 safe hits, 8 base on ball, 2 hit batters, 15 runs batted in and 2 strike outs. South had 8 safe hits, 2 base on ball, 5 runs batted in, 5 strikeouts and made 2 errors.RESULTSDIVISION 1Central 12 (Kyall McClean 4, Nathan Meinck, Alex Ridding, Josh Chuck 2, Dylan Chuck, Patrick O’HehirO) d Central Magpies 2 (Brad Lynagh, Jake Turner); Tigers 16 (Cooper Pitkin, Matt Thompson 3, Dyllan Lane, Riley Rolph 2, Will Merchant, Toby McKinnon) d South Indians 5 (Ben Nash, Jett Lewis, Ryan Walter 2, Ryan Whitwell, Phoenix Cole)
