The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system about the size of a walnut, situated just below the bladder and in front of the rectum.

Its main purpose is to produce a protein called prostate specific antigen (PSA), which assists in the transport of sperm.

With age, the prostate gland slowly enlarges and so to the production of PSA. Research shows that around 25 per cent of men aged 55 years and over have a prostate condition.

This increases to 50 per cent by the age of 70 years. If you are a man aged 55 years or older, talk to you doctor about whether you need to have your prostate gland checked, and, if so, how often.
