THE Under 10 and Under 14 Anglesea basketball teams are “full of beans” after receiving a generous donation from the Anglesea Lions Club.

The Anglesea Basketball Club has needed new uniforms for quite some time but did not know where to acquire the funds to do so.

According to basketball parent and coach at the club Zoe Sasulu, the club had thought of asking the local establishments to contribute to their cause.

“We were thinking of approaching some of the businesses in the area, like the Great Ocean Road Resort and the local Fish and Chips shop,” Ms Sasulu said.

“We were even willing to let the companies put their logo on the uniforms, but thankfully the Lions Club were able to help us out.”

After the parents from the club drafted together a letter back in March, the Anglesea Lions Club were able to donate two sets of uniforms to the club – one for the Under 10 Roos squad and the other for the Under 14 Joeys Squad.

Lions’ member and secretary at the time Des Clancy was happy to hear out the basketball club.

“We were approached by Zoe who was looking to buy new singlets for the young kids and because the Lions like to support local clubs, especially youth clubs, we decided to fund them,” Mr Clancy said.

“It’s all a part of being a small community. Being there to support clubs and helping out anyone who might be struggling for money.”

The Lions accumulate their funds by conducting various events throughout the year such as a weekly raffle at the Anglesea Hotel every Friday, the monthly Anglesea market held over the summer months and more.

“It was really amazing,” Ms Sasulu said.

“The uniforms are fantastic, and everyone loves them. They even look like the Anglesea Football Club jerseys to help embrace the community feeling.”

The Anglesea basketball club’s teams play each week at Wurdi Baierr Stadium in Torquay as a part of the Surfcoast Basketball Association.
