COVID-friendly coasting

October 15, 2020 BY

SURFING Victoria’s Coasting for Teens program returned to Torquay this October with added surf lessons and a COVID-safe plan.

The program aims to engage teenage girls in physical activity by teaching participants stand up paddle boarding, while providing an opportunity to connect with nature, and in a get back into exercise in a safe, fun and different way.

Returned programs followed the guidance of Surfing Victoria’s COVID Risk Management Plan; making sure groups were small, equipment was cleaned, participants declaring they were healthy, wearing masks during briefings, while social distancing at all times.

Coasting program manager Monica Fleming said the program included an addition of Learn to Surf lessons, which had made the return of the initiative even more exciting.

“Whilst finally being able to deliver again has been exciting, it was made even more exciting with the integration of Learn to Surf sessions becoming a part of the sessions we deliver,” Ms Fleming said.

“We are currently busy putting together a COVID-friendly summer schedule for the program across Victoria.”

An initiative of VicHealth, the coasting program also delivered online tips and fitness schedules during isolation, which has been an important way for participants to stay connected in the lead up to face-to-face sessions.

“The program promotes connection to nature paired with physical activity, which are two really important pillars when looking at mental health holistically,” Ms Fleming said.

“Going out for a paddle gives teens the chance to leave their phones or whatever worries they may have on the shore and spend time having fun without pressure.”

Surfing Victoria hopes to continue SUP programs at Anglesea and Surf Lessons in Torquay over summer.

“With the addition of learn to surf sessions paired with the increase of people being interested in getting involved in ocean sports we are really excited to see what this summer brings for the program.”
