THE LIONS club of Anglesea is determined to ensure it can continue serving the community for at least another half-century by recruiting the next generation of members to its ranks.

The club hosted a function last month to attract new members and group president Adrian Hunter said he was heartened to see 20 prospects turn up for an introduction to Lions from local member Leon Wilson.

“It’s very good,” Mr Hunter said of the turnout.

Chartered in May of 1968 the group currently has 15 people on its books, however active member numbers are dwindling with members concerned without new members the club might struggle to survive.

The group prides itself on community service and has helped support important local causes like raising funds for grade 6 bursaries at the Anglesea and Aireys Inlet Primary School, supporting children with cancer and sponsoring the Christmas carols.

“Last year we put over $20,000 back into the community,” Mr Hunter said.

“There’s lots of other organisations which are just for fellowship, but Lions raises money and does a lot of things that people don’t know about.”

He cites an example of members mowing the laws of a local family that’s dealing with illness as another example of the rewarding work they do.

For Lions Anglesea members the monthly meetings are also a chance to meet others in town, make new friends, and feel involved with the community.
The monthly gatherings at the Anglesea bowls club is combined with dinner and Adrian Hunter said those interested in joining shouldn’t be put off by having missed the open night last month.

“If you’re still considering joining then please come along,” he said.

The next dinner meeting is on March 6 at the Anglesea bowls club and prior bookings are necessary.
