ONE of the Great Ocean Road’s most used walks is set to re-open early next year, with refurbishments nearly complete.

Maits Rest Rainforest Trail, situated in the Great Otway National Park just east of Apollo Bay, has been closed for reconstruction for some time.

While wet weather in winter and spring led to delays, the refurbishment of the 800-metre boardwalk aims to better protect the surrounding ecosystem and enhance the visitor experience.

The $2.5 million investment will enable a wider walkway and new viewing areas to be built, as well as creating more seating and rest spots.

Jason Borg, Parks Victoria South Western regional manager, said this type of project epitomised what Parks Victoria hopes to achieve in the future.

“Parks Victoria is committed to building nature-based tourism assets that connect people with the outdoors. Smart construction better protects the environment and creates immersive and memorable experiences for visitors.

“A refurbished Maits Rest will provide a new opportunity for visitors to engage with an ancient landscape full of wonders.”

Parks Victoria’s hope is that the improvements to the boardwalk will mean there is less incentive for people to step off it, and will subsequently alleviate pressure on the rainforest.

There are also some small improvements being made to the carpark to facilitate the 150,000 people visit who the trail each year.

The nearby Melba Gully remains open and includes plenty of parking and public toilets.
