Program aims to empower community leaders

October 29, 2020 BY

APPLICATIONS are open for the Surf Coast Shire’s Casuarina Community Leadership Program.

The program involves 13 sessions which teach participants skills, including project management, effective communication and engagement, and grant application and aims to develop participant’s leadership skills.

“We are lucky to have so many passionate locals who have a deep understanding of their community and its needs,” Surf Coast Shire Culture and Community general manager Chris Pike said.

“This program equips our budding leaders with the practical skills to realise their community project ideas.

“We’d love to see a wide range of communities represented and an equally broad range of project ideas covering topics from sustainability to social connection.”

Owner of Littler Feast restaurant in Aireys Inlet Vera Fagone was a former Casuarina Community Leadership Program participant.

Ms Fagone said she benefited greatly from the experience.

“It was something I really needed to do. The program was truly inspiring and gave me the confidence to have a go. I completed the program in 2016 and I still refer to my notes now. I’d encourage anyone thinking about doing ‘something more’ to apply.”

Participation in the program is free, although there are only 30 spaces available.

The sessions run from February to June 2021.
