Torquay Community House drums up new activities

August 20, 2020 BY

TORQUAY Community House is embracing change to deliver a range of virtual classes, including the upcoming Online African Drumming Workshop.

Since the reintroduction of Stage 3 restrictions, Torquay Community House has been getting creative with how they keep community members connected and active.

The Let’s Go Outside program has been reimagined as Let’s Go Inside.

Neighbourhood Houses Victoria office manager Karen Washfold said the altered program offered a wide range of activities to keep people engaged.

“We’re doing a whole lot of stuff online, we’re doing Bootscooting, Inside Talking Circle, Tai Chi, and Yoga for Healthy Aging. So, at 10am every weekday there’s something on for people to participate in,” Ms Washfold said.

“When they did outside they had so many people turn up, it really looked like people were searching for a way to connect to other people in the community.”

But the Online African Drumming Workshop is the centrepiece of Torquay Community House’s Term 3 calendar.

Ms Washfold said the workshop had been popular when held elsewhere, providing an accessible way for people to create music.

“It’s a great way for people to come together,” she said.

“Not everyone’s got a drum, so it’s just about using things around the house, so anyone can participate.

“We’re looking to do something a bit different to keep people’s spirits up.”

The workshop has been subsidised to make it more affordable during a time when many have less disposable income.

Taking place at 1.40pm on Thursday, September 3, the workshop costs $10 to register.

Let’s Go Inside simply requires people to have their quarterly House Membership, which is also $10.

Membership also provides free access to a range of other activities offered by Torquay Community House.
