Western United to run match day fundraiser in Geelong for bushfire relief

At the match, the community will have a chance to pay tribute to the heroics of those who have fought the devastating bushfires while helping to raise funds for those affected by this tragedy.

It will be a day when A-League football and the community come together to help those in need.

In return, fans will have the chance to see Western United play for free in an A-League match with a range of family-friendly fun and kids’ activities being run throughout the day.

Western United chief executive officer Chris Pehlivanis said the day was about being part of the community more than being a football team.

“This day is bigger than football. It’s an event for the entire community to come together and show we are united in helping those communities in need.

“What’s more, our members, fans and the broader community will have the opportunity to show their appreciation for the emergency services and volunteers who have worked tirelessly through the crisis, whilst also paying respects to the tragic loss of life across Australia.”

Western United will be donating $2 for every club member that attends the game, and will also give 100 per cent of the profits from the merchandise they sell will go to charity. The players’ shirts from both sides will also be auctioned off for charity.

The opponents on the day are Central Coast Mariners, an A-League team located in an area of New South Wales also hit hard by the fires.

The Mariners recently turned one of their home games into a special event for their brave women and men from the NSW Rural Fire Service, so it is fitting that both sides are playing each other on this special day.

Mr Pehlivanis encouraged people to come and show their support.

“We encourage everyone to head to GMHBA stadium as early as possible to come together as a community and show our support during this difficult time.

“It’s time to unite for this worthy cause.”

The gates will open at 2pm with kick-off at 4pm. People will be asked to give a donation at the event.

The money from the day will go to Western United’s charity partners The Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal, and Football for Fire Affected Farmers, Families and Their Communities.
