WESTERN United Football Club’s match against Central Coast Mariners at Kardinia Park on Sunday, January 20 doubled as a fundraiser to raise money for bushfire disaster relief.

A spokesperson for the club said while they were still counting they believed approximately $50,000 was raised on the day.

The money was raised in various ways.

Attendance was made free for the day, but people were encouraged to give a donation upon entry.

The funds the day raised went to both The Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Appeal, and Football for Fire Affected Farmers, Families and Their Communities.

The club also donated $2 for every club member that attended the game and gave all of the money from merchandise they sold on the game to charity.

While the on-field action was secondary to the fundraising off the pitch, Western United put in a stellar performance to win 3-0.

Besart Berisha once again showed his quality upfront. He scored either side of a Central Coast Mariners own goal to see his team three goals up in the 21st minute.

With the season just past its half way point Western United sit fifth in the league.
