All division down as sun sets on season
IN the penultimate round of local Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Bowls Region Saturday Pennant action Heathcote played third placed Strathfieldsaye and were soundly defeated by 35 shots, 57 to 92.
Bill Gardiner’s rink made an even start with scores level on the ninth and 11th ends but then struggled winning only four more changes to lose by four shots, 21 to G Etherton’s 25.
Greg Speirs’ squad started by winning six of the first seven ends, but scores were level by the 11th. Shots and ends were then shared but despite winning the last two frames, Speirs’ team went down by a shot, 16 to T Probert’s 17.
Maurice Lee’s team made a slow start losing the first four ends and trailed by 11 shots after 12. His side continued to struggle losing the last three ends to go down by 21 shots, 9 to T Featherstone 30.
After an even start John McGillivray’s rink was down by five shots by the 12th end. His team then lost four of the last five changes to go down by nine shots, 11 to L Caloon’s 30
In the final round of the home and away season Heathcote are on the road at North Bendigo.
In Division 7 Heathcote travelled to North Bendigo needing to win to gain a place in the four but went down by five shots, 59 to 64.
Richard Edwards’ foursome started slowly losing the first three ends but trailed by only four shots at the 12th. Shots and ends were then shared and despite winning the last end Edwards’ team went down by five shots, 15 to H Hall’s 20.
Barry Cail’s rink led by two after six but then lost the next half-dozen ends to trail by 17 by the 16th frame. Picking the next four frames Cail’s ended up losing by 10 shots, 17 to T Cogan’s 27.
Lorraine Speirs’ squad scored five shots in the second frame and led by 13 at the 12th end. Her rink then dropped the last four ends but held onto win by 10 shots, 27 to D Henson’s 17.
Next Week the Saint’s Division 7 side hosts Bendigo East.
It was a similar group outcome for Heathcote’s Division 2 Midweek pennant side with the Saint’s hosting Harcourt in windy conditions for a nine shot loss, 56 to 65.
Dot Cutajar’s squad made a good start winning seven of the first 10 ends to lead by 11 shots. Her team lost the last two ends but held onto 10-shot victory, 24 to C Frost’s 14.
Eileen O’Brien’s foursome started slowly and trailed by 10 shots after 18 ends. Then O’Brien’s team won four of the last five ends to go down by only a shot, 19 to D Marsh’s 20.
Lorraine Speirs’ side made a poor start losing the first three ends and was down by 18 after the 15th Frame. Her team won the last two ends for an 18-shot defeat, 13 to 31..
In social bowls on Wednesday 8 February, 10 bowlers played three games of pairs and triples in warm conditions.
The winners were Richard Edwards and Ellis Knight with one win, two draws, 32 points and up 1 shot.
Runners up were Duncan McGann and John Hutson on one win, one draw, 27 points, +3 shots.
