Pioneers inspire new generation
MOUNT Gambier’s junior basketballers, registered members of the newly established Ford Aussie Hoops, were treated to a fantastic basketball experience when the 2026 Pioneers squads were guest coaches at their session last Friday.
Basketball Mount Gambier board member and development coordinator Phil Pedler, in partnership with coach and program organiser Warwick Kettle, set up Mount Gambier’s Ford Aussie Hoops Program, which was launched at the beginning of the current school term.
The interest and participation exceeded all expectations due mainly to the quality of the program, based on introducing the fundamentals of the game of basketball and the experienced regular coaches.
Numbers of participants are more than 60 reached just several weeks into the program.
This popular program is run on Fridays at the Ice House from 5pm to 5.45pm in two groups – Under 8 and Under 10 year olds.
The ‘Meet the Pioneers’ session on Friday saw the Pioneers players actively coaching in a variety of activities and fun mini-competitions.
The session was rounded off with the Pioneers signing basketballs and merchandise along with a visit to view the historical records of the club at the Ice House, the first home of the Pioneers Players, parents, and coaches enjoyed a sausage sizzle and social chat to conclude the event.
Phil Pedler described the night as filled with lots of excitement with the kids and families.
“Events such as these are working towards building a better local basketball community,” he said.
It is planned to continue having the Pioneers involved in future Ford Aussie Hoops sessions.
