Tough defence a highlight on the diamond

FIRST innings saw both teams scoring two on the board with safe hits from Wanderers Lily Clifford-Finch and Emily Little and Demons Simone Little and Bella Morale. Fly catches were also caught in the innings by Clifford-Finch and the two opposing Littles.

In the second, Kat Chaplin started at the plate earning herself a safe hit to centre field, before the red and blue defence got the three outs in the next three batters with a line drive to Merrett at third and an amazing fly catch at centre from new comer and crowd favourite Katelyn Laube.

The Dees took the bat for a ride in the offence, scoring six safe hits.

The glove of Clifford-Finch was unmatched as she scored her second out, and Abbie Lovekin took a foul fly to help minimise the damage. Demons scored six.

Sonia Morris hit a wonderful double to right field before sweetheart Tieran Vos got redemption with a fly catch.

Simone Little and Meg Merrett also worked hard on the glove and caught another two outs leaving Wanderers scoring three in the third.

Demons continued strong at the plate scoring five with three single safe hits.

Fiona Finch was ever so trusty in the defence with an overall three fly catches for the game.

Both teams held strong in the field in the fourth and fifth with Wanderers put three more on the board to Demons one.

Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to undo the clinic that was the offensive second and third from the Red and Blue as Demons went on to win 14-8. CONCORDES WHITE V WARRIORS WHITE

This closely contested match between Concordes White and Warriors White featured aggressive base running and batting with standout performances from both sides.

Both teams started strong advancing into scoring positions but neither were able to capitalise ending the innings with no score.

Warriors came out batting with Karen Te Anau safely reaching first base.

Sarah Polderman stepped up and combined with aggressive running was heading for a home run.

In the play of the day Concordes defensive relay from outfield put Polderman out at home plate however the first run was not averted, with Te Anau stealing home.

Concordes were again unable to score.

Teresa Hatch stepped up to the plate and another warriors bat to third base and managed to score.

Concordes pitcher Dane Jones was able to prevent any further runs with her aggressive and accurate pitching.

Concordes then took to the plate with all players batting aggressively.

Combined with smart base running, Concordes added four runs to their total which had them leading 4-3 into the next innings.

Concordes tightened their defensive play and with some smart pitching held Warriors to only one run evening the score 4-4.

In the last innings Concordes lengthened their lead with another three runs, winning the game 7-4.WANDERERS V WARRIORS BLUE

Wanderers took on Warriors Blue in their second game of the round and no doubt some sore and tired bodies.

Fielding first, Wanderers pitcher Rej Smith picked off lead off batter Caroline Bradshaw with a hit straight back to pitcher.

She was not so lucky with Maddy Bignell singling and putting her self in base as a runner.

Veteran Leyna Bruggemann cleverly crowded crowded catcher Leanne little allowing Bignell to advance to second, and then again to third with Bignell coming home on a wild throw.

Bruggemann singled to shortstop but advanced to second on a wild throw.

Wanderers settled the field with Taylor Pearson caught out at the plate by Leanne little and Maddy Sutherland caught out by Sonia Morris at centrefield.

Smith found herself safe at first with an error by Sutherland at third.

Fiona Finch was put out with a great catch by young Maddy Bignell at catcher, and Lily Clifford Finch’s speed was not fnough to keep her safe after ringing Bruggemann glove at the mound.

With two lights out, Wanderers batters rallied, with Morris singling to third, Emily Little and King got lucky rub muffed fly catches, but Leigh’s hit was strong enough to bring home Morris and Little.

Kaigg scored from a pass ball. Leanne little found Bradshaw at shortstop ending Wanderers innings with a 4-1 lead.

Phillips showed patience in the box and took a walk and stole second.

Analeigh Anderson singled to centrefield big both were out at third in seperate plays.

Vickers walked but Bradshaw found the glove of Fiona finch at left field a guaranteed out ending warriors bat.

Wanderers bats really fired up in their second innings with Clifford- Finch doubling and bringing home Smith and Fiona Finch, followed not long after with a double to Lovekin who brought home Emily Little.

A third double for the innings by Kat Chaplin brought home Leanne Little, wanderers headed back into the field adding 10 runs to their total.

Warriors fought back with Bignell, Bruggemann and Pearson all singling, and Sutherland and Phillips walking, before Analeigh Anderson was caught out by Morris and Vickers was struck out.

Kelly Anderson found Rej Smith’s glove ending the dig for Warriors.

Warriors upped the defence and continued the pressure with only Morris getting on base by error, Bradshaw took two plays at shortstop and experienced pitcher Bruggemann struck out Kaigg.
