THE Artist Series returns to Torquay Wine Store on November 23, showcasing the fine works of acrylic painter and street art expert Mike McLean.

Best known locally for his Willy the Wagtail calling cards, McLean is a well-respected contemporary artist who likes to experiment with colourful large scale murals and bright and intricate portraits of the female form.

McLean has more than 30 commissioned mural works, while his Willy the Wagtail pieces have appeared in the Czech Republic, South Africa, Italy, Singapore, Finland, Spain, Norway, the United States of America and more.

The Torquay Wine Store will be the first time the local artist will be exhibiting his works publicly in over two decades.

“I’ve always used social media to sell my work, so I’ve never felt the need to exhibit, however this time, it just felt right,” McLean said.

“I absolutely love this beautiful little wine bar and love what Mick has done with it, so when he asked, I was all ears.

“For those who come down, expect mainly female nudes and plenty of bright colourful abstract works.

“It’s nice they [Torquay Wine Store] are supporting locals and putting on these types of exhibitions. I’m really happy to be involved.”

Torquay Wine Store owner, Mick Dowling said it was a joy to be presenting McLean’s colourful collection.

“We are really excited!” he said.

“In terms of people who have had an impact on the local community, it’s hard to think of anyone who’s had a bigger one.

“There aren’t too many who don’t know about Willy the Wagtail and of Mike’s collection.

“However, the thing which fascinates me the most is his portrait and abstract pieces of women of their faces or their form.

“They are very striking and beautiful, and I think people will go nuts for them.”

McLean will be in attendance on the night of the exhibition launch to host a Q and A session regarding his work.

All works will be available for purchase at under $1,000.

Wine, cheese and art will all be available on the evening.
