Portarlington Golf Club – December 28, 2017

December 29, 2017 BY

MANY golfers toss the balls up and play a competition within their group. The losing pair usually buys a Keno or Lotto ticket and rarely is a payout achieved. Committee member Herb Picker, with the help of the Men’s Shed, have created an alternative “Cash Bonanza” system where golfers have a greater chance of winning cash prizes. The profit from the “Peg Board” will be devoted to the development of Men’s, Women’s and Juniors’ golf. A flyer has been distributed which details how the system works and is also available on the website. A big thank you to Herb and the Men’s Shed.

Tuesday December 19, Men’s 4BBB Par
A nasty warm one was the order of the day for the 146 starters, with many of us feeling the pinch as the day wore on. However, with a spectacular score of 12 up, Tony Fiteni and Brad Clarke took all before them to demolish the course and take out the top prize. Almost as good were Denis Wood and Doug Beare with 11 up, who were only a countback ahead of Colin Warren and Don McKenzie. The remaining voucher winners were Bill Archer and Bruce Lancaster with +10. The NTP’s were won by Lindsay Powell, Darrin Wilson and Peter Bauer, and the ProPin cash was collected by Simon Grundell.

Wednesday December 20, Ladies Stableford
Another warm day brought 49 women out of their comfort zone (and away from their Christmas shopping) to participate in the day’s event. Great golf by new vice captain Jill Barker, accumulating 39 points to win Trophy of the Day and A Grade by a mere point from Angela Royal. Young up-and-comer Sophie Hood topped the B Graders with 34 points to edge out Helen Davey on a countback, and a 37 by Heather Spry won C Grade by a point from Carmel Scarff, who also collected an NTP. The other NTPs were struck by Helen Newitt and Jacqui Murrihy, and the ProPins went to Jacky Rowe (0-25) and Chris Callan (26-45)

No Saturday report due to the Christmas early deadline.
