Saints face Square in top-of-ladder clash

HEATHCOTE is at home as it takes on Golden Square in Saturday’s clash of the top teams in division three of Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields weekend pennant bowls.

The Saints are 40 points and 170 shots clear of the second-placed Bulldogs.

When they met in round three it was Heathcote that won on Golden Square’s turf by 24 shots.

The Saints overcame a slow start to win all rinks in a 13-shot victory at Castlemaine last Saturday.

Heathcote led 78-65 after the final bowl.

Maurice Lee 18 d P. Hunter 14, Chris Morcom 20 d S. McCoombe 15, Adam Luxford 18 d R. Roberts 15, Bill Gardiner 22 d M. Fletcher 21.

In division six, Heathcote won all three rinks at Strathfieldsaye to claim a 79-50 victory.

Denis Kilner 24 d S. Price 21, Lorraine Speirs 24 d S. McGregor 15, Brian Berger 31 d S. McMurray 14.

The Saints play at White Hills this Saturday.

In round three it was White Hills that won at Heathcote by 11 shots.

Heathcote is 12 points behind the fourth-placed North Bendigo in the race to claim a finals berth.

In midweek pennant, Heathcote travelled to Kangaroo Flat.

After an even start it was the Kangaroos who leapt clear to win 64-44.

Lorraine Speirs 15 lost to M. Watts 22, Eileen O’Brien 9 lost G.Waegeli 25, Dot Cutajar 20 d D. Densley 17.

The Speirs-led rink held a one-shot lead after 12 ends. Scores were level on the 19th end, but Watts won the final end by six shots.

Although beaten on the last five ends, Cutajar fought on for a three-shot win.

There will be no midweek pennant next Monday Because of the Australia Day public holiday.

The Saints will be back in action on 3 February to play Harcourt from 10am on Heathcote’s greens.
